Multidisciplinary Comprehensive Haemato-Oncology and Cancer Care Services

The Cancer & Radiosurgery Centre (CRC) of Subang Jaya Medical Centre (SJMC) has built a strong reputation since 2002 and evolved to become a leader in regional cancer care. The Centre offers the full complement of services designed to address all aspects of cancer treatment for both adult and paediatric patients through a multidisciplinary and integrated approach.

Surgical, Radiation, Medical & Interventional Oncology
The radiation therapy suites are fitted with very advanced and sophisticated equipment and technology to administer radiation treatment to cancer patients:
  • Radixact X9 Tomotherapy with Synchrony (1st in Malaysia – precision cancer therapy)
  • MultiSource High-Dose-Rate (HDR) Brachytherapy
  • Intensity-Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT)
  • Image-Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT)
  • Radiosurgery
  • Intraoperative Radiation Therapy (IORT)
  • External Beam Radiation
Trail-blazing protocols in interventional oncology therapeutic procedures
  • The Vascular & Interventional Radiology (VIR) Centre at SJMC has pioneered several protocol firsts in therapeutic interventional oncology since its inception in 2002.
Nuclear Medicine Imaging & Therapy
  • Discovery MI Gen2 Digital PET/CT (1st in Malaysia – new generation of world’s 1st digital PET/CT platform)
Haemato-oncology (blood diseases) & Bone Marrow Transplant / Stem Cell Transplant
  • Over 770 bone marrow/stem cell transplants (adult & paediatric) performed as at Jan 2022
  • Plethora of treatment advancements in recent years for haematologic malignancies, including treatment of acute leukaemia, myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) and aggressive lymphomas
Advanced Genetics in Oncologic Pathology Studies
  • The Molecular Diagnostic and Cytogenetics services laboratory offers cutting-edge genetic and molecular studies and diagnostics, with a focus on targeted therapy in oncology.
  • Molecular studies and diagnostic services offered include the Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR), droplet digital PCR, next generation sequencing (NGS) as well as a wide range of fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) tests for malignancies such as lung, breast and haematological cancers.
  • NGS is able to detect cancer mutations (inheritable and acquired mutations) to provide a molecular rationale for appropriate targeted therapy or prognostication.
  • The Molecular Diagnostic Laboratory is also heavily invested in research activities with international and local collaborators, endeavouring to move research findings from the laboratory bench to the bedside.
Psychosocial Oncology (Patient Support & Education Services)

Cancer support groups provide patients and families an opportunity to express and share their concerns, fears, and hopes with those who are experiencing similar life challenges.

How a Cancer Support Group can help?

  • To improve both quality of life and survival.
  • Helps you feel better, more hopeful, and not alone.
  • Gives you a chance to talk about your feelings and work through them.
  • Can help you cope better with your diagnosis and increase your knowledge of cancer and its treatment.
  • Helps you cope with side effects of treatment.

What Sets our Cancer Care Services apart?

1st Stereotactic Radiosurgery (SRS) / 1st Stereotactic Radiation Therapy (SRT)

Setting medical firsts in Malaysia (Private Sector) since 1999. Among them were:

1999
  • 1st hematopoietic stem cell transplant
2000
  • 1st adult Bone Marrow transplant
2002
  • 1st paediatric bone marrow transplant
  • 1st FISH procedure
  • 1st Radiotherapy
  • 1st Stereotactic Radiosurgery (SRS)
  • 1st Stereotactic Radiation Therapy (SRT)
2005
  • 1st Iodine-131 Ablative Dose for Thyroid Cancer (nuclear medicine)

Patient survival outcomes are among the highest internationally

  • SJMC is among the first hospitals in Malaysia to embark on routine measurement of the performance of its cancer care services and its results are comparable to any leading centres in developed countries.
  • Renowned and esteemed consultant specialists / top expertise in the country who are well respected by their peers and juniors in the medical fraternity

Latest advanced medical technology and equipment for better diagnostics and therapeutic outcomes

1st in Southeast Asia to undertake express Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS) using the Genexus® platform

  • NGS - personalized and precision studies based on genetic profiling of malignancies
  • Technique where scientists and molecular pathologists can determine whether genetic alterations have occurred in cancer cells in a very expeditious way.
  • Crucial for precision medicine because when doctors are able to identify the mutations that are present within cancer patients, they can tailor more effective treatments against the mutation that is driving the cancer.
  • Results for rapid genetic testing of tumours can now be obtained within 3 working days instead of 2 to 3 weeks.

Clinical trials and studies in collaboration with Cancer Research Malaysia

  • Largest genetic and genomic database of Asian breast cancers to-date built by a group of Malaysian scientists from Subang Jaya Medical Centre, Cancer Research Malaysia and the University of Cambridge in the UK
  • By the end of 2020, Malaysians accounted for nearly 20% of total breast genomic maps published globally, with Korea and China making up 13%. Genomic map helps doctors discover new things they never knew about Asian breast cancer cases.

Tumour Board

  • Managing cancer requires a multi-disciplinary approach to optimize the outcome in the care of an individual patient. This approach is formalized in the formation of the Tumour Board which undertakes to facilitate the discussion amongst relevant practitioners to meet this need. This board also provides a platform for continuous medical education to all in attendance.
  • To facilitate and integrate the management of patients with cancer.
  • To discuss difficult and controversial cases
