Tumour Biopsy

A doctor needs to perform a biopsy to diagnose cancer. In a biopsy, a sample of tissue is taken by the doctor. A pathologist examines the tissue under a microscope and performs other tests to determine whether it is cancerous. In the diagnosis of cancer and the selection of treatment options, pathology reports play an instrumental role.

The different types of tumour biopsies:

  • Incisional: it is only necessary to remove a small sample of tissue
  • Excisional: remove the entire lump or suspicious area
  • Fine needle: a needle is used to remove a sample of tissue or fluid
  • Endoscopic: the removal of tissue is performed using an endoscope
  • Bone marrow: a large needle is used to collect bone marrow from the pelvis
