Vascular & Interventional Radiology (VIR)

VIR is a cutting-edge medical specialty that utilises image-guidance to perform minimally invasive, vascular and non-vascular procedures to diagnose and treat a wide range of diseases, including cancer.

VIR is performed through small incisions, allowing catheters, needles and other devices to be guided to the treatment site.

Because of its minimally invasive nature, VIR offers smaller incisions, less pain and scarring, reduced risk of infection and complications, shorter hospital stays and faster recovery times; compared to open surgery.

SJMC was the 1st private hospital in Malaysia to set up a VIR service, which performs the entire gamut of image-guided, minimally invasive procedures in a clinically-based VIR practice. Since the inception of its state-of-the-art vascular interventional angiography suite in 2002, SJMC has performed thousands of VIR and interventional oncology procedures.

Through a multidisciplinary approach, VIR manages many diseases, including cancer and tumour management.

Type of procedures include

  • tumour ablation in the liver lung kidney and bone using Radio-frequency, Microwave and Cryoablation, Trans-arterial chemoembolization (TACE), Radioembolization
  • treatment of liver tumours using catheters to inject chemotherapeutic agents (chemoembolization) or radioactive particles (radioembolization) directly into the tumours
  • thermal ablation of tumours through heating (microwave ablation) or freezing (cryoablation)
  • image-guided biopsies, drainages and stenting
